Technical Art History

Technical art history is the study of artworks from an interdisciplinary perspective, including art historical, technical and scientific points of view.

It focuses on object-based research, combining traditional art historical analyses with material insights from science and technology.

It brings a deeper understanding of techniques, production and creative processes and uses of materials by artists and artisans.

Moreover, it provides knowledge of the interaction between artistic ideas, technical innovations and stylistic developments, and the mobility of makers, techniques and materials.

It might be interesting for cultural institutions as well as private collectors to contribute to answering or supporting attribution, dating or other related art historical questions in a more scientific and comprehensive way.

It might also open up new exciting lines of enquiry.
